Dear Praying Friends,

“I REMEMBER JOHN SUNG came like a scorching flame over our souls with deep deep conviction as we read & reread his words

He mentioned The Holy Spirit  fell in NANCHANG PENTECOST

And we quote

       During this time Dr. Sung preached three times a day, and every time like a house afire.  He wore out the paint on the platform, and they asked him to wear rubber-soled shoes.  He would come back to our house, take off all his wet garments, and throw them “plop” out of his room into the hall, as I had suggested, and our amah would wash them — three sets a day!

       One noon we had all our Fu River pastors come to our house for lunch with Dr. Sung, including Hsiung Fei, our district superintendent.  Hsiung was a bright and capable man, but he was very proud.  He asked Dr. Sung: “This morning you said that some leader in our work would betray Christ as Judas did.  What advice would you give us, so that we would not be that leader?” Dr. Sung replied like a flash: “Don’t be a leader.”  Hsiung Fei dropped his head like he had been shot.  No one said anything, for all knew that leadership was Hsiung’s temptation.

I Sin Every Day”

       One day, Dr. Sung, in speaking about sin, said, “I sin every day myself.” I was struck to the heart.  Here was this man, whom the students almost worshipped, condoning sin, which Jesus had condemned.  That night I spent the night in prayer for him.  This, unfortunately, is only once of a very few times that I have spent a night in prayer for anyone.  The next morning, after breakfast, I asked him to come into our living room.  I pointed my finger at him, as he would do to others, and said, “Dr. Sung, you are of the devil.” He exclaimed, “Wha-what?”  I said, “Jesus told us, ‘He that sinneth is of the devil’, and yesterday you said that you sin every day.” I never heard him condone sin again, or preach a “sinning religion.”

       At the end of the first two weeks, Dr. Sung announced on Sunday morning that he would not preach that night, that he would pray, and any who wanted to pray with him could come: “If six or eight or ten come, that is all right.” In the afternoon 193 students and teachers went to a village, Bean Sprout Lane, about two miles outside the city.  I had conducted a “Thousand Character School” there in previous years, but nobody had been converted.  The students and teachers went two by two into the village homes to witness.  They would come out of the houses with the villagers bringing their idols.  The stone idols they threw into the river.  The wooden ones they burned.  The entire village gave up idolatry.

Water Baptism and Holy Ghost Baptism

       On the way back it “rained pitchforks”, a tremendous rain.  Only one student had an umbrella, and the wind turned it inside out.  The water was running down over their faces, and their hair was plastered down over their foreheads.  But they came to me with shining faces, saying, “Mr. Schubert, John the Baptist said, ‘I baptize with water, but Jesus will baptize you with the Holy Ghost.’ We are getting our water baptism now; maybe we will get our Holy Ghost baptism tonight.” And that is exactly what happened.

       That evening, instead of the six or eight or ten coming, there were 250 to 300 present in the Baldwin School chapel.  The place was filled.  Dr. Sung had us sing some choruses about prayer. Then he told us to pray.  But nobody prayed.  It was rather embarrassing at first.  Then two little high school girls stood up and began to pray at the same time.  I can still see their double braids. We had never had that; never more than one person prayed at the one time.  I remembered what Gypsy Smith had told about when he was preaching in a “Gothic” church in Virginia, controlled by a “Gothic lady”.  When two persons prayed at the same time, this “Gothic lady” said, “Mr. Smith, you tell them to stop; we can’t have two persons praying at the same time.” He told her, “Sister, God has two ears.”

The Holy Spirit Fell on All Present

       Just then the Holy Spirit fell on everybody.  All began to pray at once.  There was no rushing wind, and there were no tongues that I know of.  But God spoke to everyone in Chinese, and it seemed the natural thing to pray in Chinese, with utterance beyond what I had ever experienced.  God spoke to me in Chinese, and I prayed in torrents of Chinese.

       At first, Dr. Sung was very much surprised, and not pleased.  He called out for us to stop: “We don’t want any fanaticism here.”  I don’t think he had ever been in a place where all prayed at one time, though later in his meetings it often happened.  Later, it became common, and still is practiced in Taiwan and among most evangelical Chinese groups everywhere.  But at the time we had never seen or heard it before.  The whole outburst was unplanned and spontaneous — a moving of the Holy Spirit.  But that night in March 1931 Dr. Sung stopped us.

       He asked all to go to their rooms and pray quietly.  He said, “Now I’ll pronounce the benediction.” But as he prayed, the Holy Spirit fell the second time, and everybody began to pray in chorus again.  Again he stopped us: “You didn’t understand; I didn’t say to pray here; please go quietly to your rooms and pray there.” I later asked him why he stopped us, and he told me, “I didn’t want the missionaries to say ‘That crazy Sung made all the students crazy.’”

Communist Students Converted

       Then, as he began to pronounce the benediction again, the Holy Spirit fell upon the whole congregation the third time.  So he finally let us go on, and the spontaneous prayer must have continued forty-five minutes to an hour.  Christians got under conviction and confessed their sins.  There were about seven or eight communist students, who later confessed that they had been paid to come there to school to cause trouble.

         These communist students were in the center of rows, scattered throughout the audience where they could make the most disturbance.  When they got under conviction, they tried to get out, but the Christian students wouldn’t let them out of the rows.  The Christian students had been praying for them.  I can remember seeing the Christian students beating their own knees for joy when the young communists got so under conviction.  All the agitators could do was to stand up and beat their breasts and cry out, “Oh, my unspeakable sins.”  They all became earnest Christians.

       When the Holy Spirit fell on us that night in Nanchang, all the Chinese preachers from my Fu River District had come in for the district conference.  The Kan River and Nanchang District pastors were there also, as well as the students and teachers of both high schools and the doctors and nurses of our Methodist Nanchang Hospital.

Up to that time most of my pastor friends had not been born again, I fear, though I had worked with them for several years, and had prayed for them, and had talked and preached the New Birth.  But that night I think every one of them was born again, including Pastor Wang Shan-chih.  I had been his assistant pastor several years before, in the big institutional church in Nanchang.  He once confessed to me: “Mr. Schubert, I don’t even know if there is a God.”  I exclaimed, “Why, Pastor Wang, how can you be a Methodist pastor when you don’t even know if there is a God?”

He replied, “I believed in God until I went to America.  But there I lost my faith while in Union Theological Seminary.  Later, when I was visiting in England during the war, I went to see Oxford University.  There I saw the pictures of the great preachers, and I thought, ‘It is all empty.’ But something said to me, ‘No, anything that can produce men like this, there must be something to it’.”

That was the extent of his theology: “There must be something to it.”  Someone asked me, “What did he preach?”  He preached Comparative Religion.  In his big institutional church, which he patterned after some he had seen in America, he had an English school (which I ran the year I was with him), a library, a reading room, and many social activities.  In that way he eased his conscience, but he wasn’t able to preach any Gospel of salvation.

Calvin comments:

The power of God came upon THE NANCHANG PENTECOST and that was the pivotal change of Dr. John Sung into a Revival Preacher. Many Pastors of those times were converted and genuinely born again.

Today, the Churches all over the world are filled with unsaved Preachers & Pastors preaching a man centered social gospel with “prosperity” and not God as the main focus.

Then we came to this heart searching chapters written for converts

       Another secret of Dr. Sung’s lasting success was the thorough work he did with seekers. He not only preached unsparing two-hour sermons three times a day, but then he would have altar services in which he asked searching questions.  He would name sins, and have seekers all over the big church raise their hands when he mentioned their particular sin.

       I thought because I was a missionary, and his close friend, and was there to learn, that I could look.  But he pointed at me and said in English, in no uncertain tone: “Shut your eyes.” I did! However, I took rather full notes of his Nanking sermons and altar work. (See Chapter X and Appendix.)

       As he would name their sins, and they would respond to each sin mentioned, and acknowledge by raising their hands by scores, and sometimes by hundreds, he would say: “Will you make restitution? Will you ask forgiveness? Will you forgive this person? Will you return the money you stole? Will you make right the wrong you did?” Some questions were:

Questions Dr. Sung Asked Seekers in Nanking, May 1937:

       DO YOU HATE?  Father, mother, brother, sister, teachers, grandmother, daughter-in-law, husband, wife, friend, children, fellow workers, students.  Have you not talked to them for years?  Do you hate in your heart?  Do you hate to the very bone?  Are you willing to write to them?  You must ask forgiveness, face to face, or write.  If you will, raise your hand.  Now pray:  “Lord forgive.” Have you done it?  Pray: “Lord, I will forgive; I will write.” Raise your hand if you will.  There was a widespread response, and many tears.

       MONEY STEALING: Did you “borrow” and “forget” to return things, or don’t want to return them? $100? $1000? $50? $5? 5 cents? 5 coppers?  On the train, did you borrow from a friend, and not return a handkerchief, books, an umbrella?  If you have no money now, return it later.  If they have died or you don’t know their address, give it to the poor, or to the church.  If you are willing, raise your hand!  Promise aloud. (These questions might apply in your church.  You might try using them.)

       STEAL: Did you steal from your parents, from your husband, wife, friends, or your business partner?  Did you help others steal, and keep quiet?  Did you take public funds, much or a few cents?  Did you cheat God?  Did you steal a letter?  Did you cheat in examinations?  Did you use false stamps?  Did you steal $500? $60?  One cent?  From birth to now? Return it! Pray aloud: “When I arise from my knees, Lord, I’ll return it.” Bracelet, rings, handkerchief, books, umbrella, toys, food, fruit, flowers?  Did you use public things for personal use, such as office paper?  Did you ride on a pass when you had no right?  Pay back the fare!  Did you pick up something not yours? $500? $50? 50 cents?  One cent?  Or books?  Umbrella? (Oft repeated: there must have been a lot of umbrellas taken!) Maybe someone left something in your room.  Return it. (In Peiping, officials returned thousands of dollars to the Chinese government after Dr. Sung’s meetings.  It greatly impressed other officials.)

       DID YOU COMMIT ADULTERY?  From the beginning to today?  Did you almost?  Mentally?  With people in your own family, sister, brother, man and man, woman and woman, with animals?  Have you been guilty of self-abuse?  Did you take someone’s wife or husband?  Or concubine, or someone’s else concubine?  Before marriage? (Is this too close?  Will you go on reading?)

       DID YOU KILL?  By abortion, by poison, or other way?  Have you entered the communist party?

       HABIT:  Do you gamble?  Play mahjong, drink, use cigarettes, opium, heroin, wine?  Do you sell opium, cigarettes, morphine, idol worship materials?  Do you buy or sell lottery tickets? Do you dance, go to movies, read bad books?  Do you look at pornographic pictures?  BURN THEM!

       SINS IN THE FAMILY: Do you beat members of your family?  Do you sell servants or slaves?  Do you lend money at a high rate of interest?  Are you disobedient to your parents?  Do you quarrel with your sister-in-law, or others? Will you write a letter asking forgiveness?

       SUPERSTITION:  Do you worship idols or ancestors, or the picture of Sun Yat-sen?  Do you draw lots or go to fortune tellers?  Do you eat idol food?  On Sunday, do you buy or sell food? (Travel if necessary, and buy a little food, is O.K. —Sung) Do you omit Bible study?  Have you stopped praying?  Do you testify for Christ?  Have you kept your vows?

       INNER SINS: Do you still have the old temper, jealousy, pride, covetousness, backsliding, blasphemy?  Have you an unforgiving spirit?  Did you want to commit suicide?  Have you an unbelieving heart? and not believe the Bible?  Do you doubt God, and think God is unjust?  When you were sick, did you make some promise to God, then when well did you forget your promise?  Do you worry, and have no faith?  Put your worry on God, not on yourself.  Did you blame God when someone died?  Did you ask.  “Where is God?” Did you bear false witness? Did you criticize people?  Did you write a false letter home?  Did you make love for fun, then give up? Do you have jealousy in your heart, and fight for position? Do you love the world?

       Dr. Sung asked many more questions; then had everyone pray a prayer of praise, and sing: “For me, for me, it was for me the Savior died.”

       Dr. Sung prayed, and all said, “Amen.” He told me later, for more questions see the Free Church Common Prayer Liturgy of Confession.  When I asked at lunch that day if people really did all these things, he told me that he didn’t ask the worst things people had confessed to him.

In year 1972 September 15 I got saved when the precious blood of Jesus washed away all my sins.

But this is entirely new to me.

When i read, “From birth to now?”

The Holy Spirit flashed before my very eyes the past 16 years before I became a Christian

And these were the sins which I sought to make restitution. Many might not agree but the Spirit of God was upon me in deep conviction

  1. I remembered living in KL Bukit Bintang Slum (Where Sun Complex) stood today

About the age of 7 to 8 I saw a little girl with a black purse in the shape of elephant. I stole that purse and inside it was 65 sen coins.

I also remembered when I was in Standard 4, Shaw Road Primary School, KL I stole a wooden pencil box from my classmate.

Then as I prayed & resolved to amend more sins appeared. When I was staying in the Slum the Federal Hotel in Jln Bukit Bintang was building a Revolving 2nd Building at the Back with a Relvolving Restaurant at the Top. As my friends passed by I  stole some cement to make fish tanks. I also stole the toilet rolls & paper napkins.

One night I was with a gangster boy entering into the Big Housing Estate to steal rambutans. After the first time we again entered the second time. This time the security guard was alerted & he ran. So I followed. At the gate just as i was climbing over I was hit by an iron rod in great pain.

My  father sent me to see the doctor. And i told a lie that i got into an accident

All these were sins after sins that came before. Years later I tried to sent money to those i could trace. Those I could not trace I gave them to Old Folks Home or Church Offerings. As Zacchaeus said that he will return 4 times what he had extorted.

But there was one sin that came before me

DO YOU HATE?  Father, mother, brother, sister, teachers, grandmother, daughter-in-law, husband, wife, friend, children, fellow workers, students.  Have you not talked to them for years?  Do you hate in your heart?  Do you hate to the very bone?  Are you willing to write to them?  You must ask forgiveness, face to face, or write.  If you will, raise your hand.  Now pray:  “Lord forgive.” Have you done it?  Pray: “Lord, I will forgive; I will write.” Raise your hand if you will.  There was a widespread response, and many tears

Have you not talked to them for years?

Yes, in SOM there was a brother from KL called Isaiah Choe. He was the Proctor for year 1975.

I was then a first year newbie. A total green horn. Very slow. And I was a problem for all especially Isaiah who was the Proctor.

1975 passed eventually and early in year 1976 New Batch of SOMERs gathered in PK Jesus Saves Mission to elect a new proctor for year 1976

I was totally unprepared and it never occur to me as well.

Every one is given a blank piece of paper to write the name he/she wants to be the Proctor

At the tally Isaiah Choe’s name came up. And my name came up. Only 2 names & we got equal number of votes. So it was a tie.

Round two

Again to my surprise we got 50/50 votes again. It was a tie. Then Rev. Dr. Peter Ng said, “Let us pray” before casting the third time

As the counting neared the end my name was  chosen

At that I bowed my head with a deep burden

And that was the start of a strained relationship between me & brother Isaiah

We could not talk as usual. Did i became over bearing or what? Some how there was a barrier between us.

And the Words of Dr. John Sung burned within. “Get right with brother Isaiah Chow”

So I humbled myself, approached Isaiah and confessed my faults to him. And he did likewise.

It was a glorious time of great victory as we prayed from 8pm to 10pm in SOM, 22 Jalan Belang, Singapore for the rest of year 1976, notwithstanding other crisis and trials that befell us

Of all songs this one from Psalm 23  stood out

“My soul He doth restore again

And me to walk doth make

Within the path of righteousness

Even for His own Name sake”

Amen & Amen

Note: This searching & confessions happened in year 1976

Next year in 1977 God met with us in the REVIVAL CAMP of Penang Hill in a very marvelous glorious way

It was Revivalist Evan Robert who said, “Bend the Church and save the world”

Or should we say, “Bend the Pastors and save the Church”

Search me, O God, and know my heart (A time of humbling. Circa 76/77)

Dear Praying Friends,

The year was 1976. In year 1976 I REMEMBER JOHN SUNG By William Schubert was published by the Far Eastern Bible College (1st Edition). And we read it with humbling self searching.

The place was School of Mission, 22, Jalan Belang, Off Upper Thompson Road, Singapore

Below is a photo taken in  SOM (Circa 1976)

On my right is a young fig tree. Surrounding SOM are 3 to 4 rambutan trees. We have abundant food & fruit but only $80 per month Scholarship. So we lived frugally. See that shirt I wore. It was taken from a pile donated to poor people like China Town folks or anyone in need. That one still good & fits me perfectly.

Nothing to be ashamed of as Christ was born in a manger.

1976 was also the year when I was elected as Proctor

BRITISH definition of proctor
an officer (usually one of two) at certain universities, appointed annually and having mainly disciplinary functions.

And then in year 1977 below is Rev Matthew Khoo (Proctor for Year 1997)

Every year SOMers gathered to cast votes to elect a new Proctor.

Notice the Fig tree has grown taller & the grass beside has been trimmed?

Rev.  Dr. Matthew Khoo now the current Chinese Pastor of JSM, Singapore is more disciplined

To be continued…..

TWAS GRACE THAT BROUGHT ME SAFE THUS FAR: Remembering My Salvation 49 Years Ago on September 15, 1972

Dear Praying Friends,

Every spiritual birthday is a new milestone of His grace

Tonight I am 49 years in Christ

And this was the Testimony

I was brought up in a typical heathen Chinese family in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My birth date was 2nd July 1956.

My family gods were idols with quan yin as the main object of worship. In fact i was given as a god-son of quan-yin.

It was total heathen darkness as the song goes

“Heathendom’s millions wait for the light

Wait in their darkness

Lost in the night

They have no gospel

They do not know

Jesus would save them

Still they must die”

At the age of about  8 I got up one Chinese New Year morning. To my surprise I saw at the back of my house a small group of children gathered for a card game. I used to play children games like playing marbles, catching spiders and flying kites. But this time it was different because money is involved. They were gambling. I felt a strange power that drew me as i joined in. And then I got hooked to the gambling habit. For the next eight years until age 16 I was addicted to gambling.

Those were 8 years of total abject slavery to an enslaving habit which I could not shake off. Sometime in year 1970 when I was 14 years of age my family shifted to a 1st floor shop apartment in KL. It was a newly built place. Very strange. One night when i was sleeping i felt a pair of invisible hands on my neck and I also felt a heavy oppression on my chest. I struggled and the “entity” left. I was shocked as this is a new building but “haunted”. And the oppression came back night after night.

And so it continued for the year of 1970 to 1972….for 3 years I was addicted to gambling in the day and felt the continual oppression in the night.

My father would scold me, “Don’t you dare go gambling or else I will chop off your fingers” Fearing that I swore that i will stop gambling. I succeeded for a brief time due to fear. One day I got some money and I was walking

I remember talking to myself, “Where are you going?”

“To gamble”

“Didn’t you swear that you will never again gamble?”

“Yes, I did swear.” And while I was struggling and reasoning with my mind  my feet was walking in the direction to gamble. So i know what was right to do but I could not do it as i made my way to the gambling den

Having lost all I felt very foolish & guilt got hold of  me as i walked home on that very dark day of my life. I was totally miserable.

Then again I got oppressed by evil spirits at night again. Of course I prayed faithfully at 10pm every night to Quan yin for deliverance. But to no avail as the oppression continued till year 1972 when i was 16 years old.

So by day i gambled and by night i got oppressed. This is a very miserable existence indeed.

Driven to despair one midnight I went downstair from the 1st floor apartment I looked up at the night sky and said these words,

Why do i exist here? Why is my life so full of problems i could not solve?

“Is there a God out there who knows about my problems?.”

“Who are you God?”

If you do hear me out there please reveal yourself and help me as i cried with open eyes looking up at the dark night sky

Weeks passed.

Then one day Jackson Tan Said Meng, my fellow schoolmate visited me.

He said, “I am a Christian” and handed me some tracts. I replied, “Christianity”? That is a Western man religion. Not for us Chinese as we have our own Chinese gods”

“No,” Jackson replied, “Jesus is not from Europe. Jesus founded Christianity in the Middle East”

“Oh i don’t know as i told him i will take a look at his tracts. Among the tracts Jackson gave me was a copy of

Then one night while sleeping I had a dream. I saw my body filled with diseases as i returned home.

In my home I saw all the furniture were in a shamble. Then I saw a Cross cut into half and dangling (My brother brought home a plastic cross which was hung up since he attended the Methodist School)

It was still dark. Long while before daybreak. I knelt beside my bed and asked Jesus to be my LORD AND SAVIOR

When Chinese New Year arrived in early 1973 my father told me to be happy

I said, “What do you mean by being happy?” He said, “Today Is Chinese New Year Day. So it is alright to go gamble a little. Be happy as it is an auspicious day. But not other days”

And on December 18th 2010 (11 Years ago this Prayer Blog was set up)

See the welcome introduction

What is possible for God Almighty to do, prayer can do. I have spent a very blessed  40 years observing and proving God to be true to His Word,    “Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkingness of the LORD (Psalm 107:43).”  These things refer to four catastrophic events in the  Book of Psalm 107,   men in starvation  “Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them (vs. 5)”.  Men in despair “..they fell down, and there was none to help (vs. 12).  Men in danger of loosing their lives “..they draw near unto the gates of death {vs.18).  And seaman like John Newton   “They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the  deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.  They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end. (vs.23-27)”  All these four groups in total helplessness finally  turn to God  “THEN THEY CRY UNTO THE LORD IN THEIR TROUBLE,  AND HE BRINGETH THEM OUT OF THEIR DISTRESSES (vs. 6, 13, 19 & 28)”.  Amazing Grace! How sweet The Sound!   ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear. And grace my fears relieved.” And the Bible mentions 4 times  “OH THAT MEN WOULD PRAISE THE LORD FOR HIS GOODNESS, AND FOR HIS WONDERFUL WORKS TO THE CHILDREN  OF MEN!” (vs. 8,15,21 &31)

I want to share with you that our God is the Living God!  He constantly  hear and answer  prayers, not just once in awhile, but consistently and without fail for 40 long years. He has exalted His Word above His Name;  therefore HIS PROMISES CANNOT FAIL!

”  Faith –  Mighty Faith !

The Promise sees:

Laugh at unbelieve;

And cry,  “IT SHALL BE DONE!”

I can testify 1st hand these true words  ” This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles (Psalm34:6}” And “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him (vs.7&8)”

The God who sent down fire when Elijah prayed, the Risen Lord Jesus who appeared to Paul on Damascus road, the God of George Mueller and John Sung is the same Living God today.

As this poem say,

“God is seeking faithful men

Who dare to stand alone

Counting not the sacrifice

To make His purpose known.

Now God searches all the earth

To show His Strength to men!

Those whose hearts are pure toward God

Can know His Power again!”

Please pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit  as you read.   May our GOOD  LORD be a living, bright reality  all the days of your life. Marantha!

Yours Till We Meet In The Air,

Calvin E.Y. Tan    (September 2011)

Brethren, please pray for us

We still got many chapters to tell of God’s wondrous grace and work to the praise of His glory

Today is the 43rd Anniversary JSM 1978 Evangelistic Campaign held in BHS JSM, Jalan Membina Barat, Singapore

Dear Praying Friends,

Today swiftly 43 years have passed since that memorial week of Evangelistic Campaign held in BHS JSM, Singapore

And let us refresh our memory again

See the record from diary of  September 1978

September 8th 1978 (FRIDAY)

Tonight brother Matthew spoke a Hokkien message on HEAVEN AND HELL. Again felt the power of God in the Meeting. There was a better response tonight to the message.

There was a glorious liberty of prayer at Mt. Faber to-night.

WE STORMED THE THRONE OF GRACE & CLAIMED PSALM 2:8 AGAIN.  The Meeting seem to be terminated in a very short time. When we are truly in GOD’S PRESENCE we are unconscious of time.  To GOD time is not applicable, for He is Eternal.

Note: Every Friday JSM conducts An All Night Prayer Meeting on Mt. Faber lasting from 10 pm to 4 am – a 6th hour long Marathon Prayer. There’s where we get our power from God. Prayer Meetings are power meetings. A prayerful   christian is a powerful christian and a prayerless christian is a powerless christian. Same goes for preachers and Churches. However, the prayers at Mt. Faber have ceased.

SEPTEMBER 9th 1978 (Final Day of Campaign; Saturday)

Awakened this morning in the Mission. Was alone by myself because the students went for outing. To-night the whole Mission was packed with saints and sinners. The stairs were filled.  Many others stayed outside the Mission to hear the Messages. On the last minute chaired the Meeting in the place of James Foo. Felt a little liberty as we sang, “IN TIMES LIKE THESE”. Sister Lai Siong gave her testimony. The Choir sang “SPRINGS OF LIVING WATER “. Brother Bee Hin spoke on “IS THIS THE LAST GENERATION?” Felt the chill of deep conviction in the message. Many souls were saved to-night.

The eight nights of Evangelistic Campaign closed with a glorious power of God’s Presence in the midst of His Children. Amen & Amen.

.Note: Brother Bee Hin went on to become one of the Highest Ranking Officer in the Singapore Military – COL(RET) Png Bee Hin.

Note this

Brother Bee Hin spoke on “IS THIS THE LAST GENERATION?” Felt the chill of deep conviction in the message. Many souls were saved to-night.

That was September 9th, 1978

Preceding that was the Revival Year of 1977 on Penang Hill Workers Conference Camp

See the photo again

Out of 30 members from BHS JSM about 15 responded to the Call of God for His Glorious Service

But the Revival was preceded even much earlier by days of prayer and fasting

Brother Lucky Fortunato Depasquale said, “Every revival could be traced back to a kneeling figure”

And it was Brother “Lucky” who said after the 1977 Penang Hill Revival that we should go to the Mission Churches to spread the Revival Flame by holding Evangelistic Services

Below is a photo of BHS Jsm ABC Class Members (Circa 1977/78)

In early years: The Doctrinal Class members later called “Adult Bible Class” of year 1977/8

The Core Faithful Members & Other Members Plus The BHS Student’s Club & also Members & Leaders from Other JSM Stations (The late Rev. Dr Peter Ng founding Pastor of JSM & Brother Png Bee Hin from PK JSM), (Rev. Dr. James Tan from Craig Road JSM) and Resident Chinese Missioner Rev Dr Matthew Khoo who preached 3 Messages in Mandarin, Hokkien & Cantonese) Plus the Choirs of all 3 Stations & all also helped out with the combined harvest of 68 souls

Glorious were those Days of His Visitations

And the Call to Soul Winning:

“Give us a watchword for the hour,
A thrilling word, a word of power;
A battle-cry, a flaming breath,
That calls to conquest or to death.

A word to rouse the church from rest,
To heed her Master’s high behest;
The call is given: Ye hosts arise,
Our watchword is Evangelize!

The glad evangel now proclaim,
Through all the earth, in Jesus’ name;
This word is ringing through the skies,
Evangelize! Evangelize!

To dying men, a fallen race,
Make known the gift of Gospel grace;
The world that now in darkness lies,
Evangelize! Evangelize! – Henry Crocker

Amen & Amen!

Only One Life: By C.T. Studd

Two little lines I heard one day, Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart, And from my mind would not depart;

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,

          Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet, And stand before His Judgment seat;
Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice, Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave, And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years, Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its days I must fulfill, living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore, When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way, Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep, In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife, Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn, And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone, Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, “twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say, “Thy will be done”;
And when at last I’ll hear the call, I know I’ll say ’twas worth it all”;
Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

SOM ALUMNI (Circa 78 – 1981) Blest Be The Tie That Binds

Dear Praying Partners & Friends,

In SOM everyone has to keep a Diary for markings. After SOM no longer needed. But as a habit we still keep a Diary to record God’s goodness & faithfulness.

Below is a picture of SOM ALUMNI (Circa early 1981)

Every SOMer above kept a Diary. And everyone has a story to tell of God’s great goodness

And there was a Book of Records for Blessings through the years

One day after graduated and serving in Penang I paid them a visit. Flipping through the testimonies are some highlights recorded here.

  1. Sister Lim Geok Choo (Standing at 3rd row. Fourth from the left. (22/9/1978)

Listen to her testimony

“As a loving Father, He always come to my rescue/help. As a loving Teacher, He will teach  me in the way that I shall go. As a loving Judge, He will chastise me when I am in the wrong. As a supplier {He will supply) my needs when I were in near bankruptcy.

13/8/79: She thanked the LORD for supplying all her need!!! Amen! & Amen!

Calvin comments:

All SOMers have need of a continuous supply. They live scantily. May I help them, but first, O Lord, help me to be true in Thy sight first

2. Tang Ah Chang – 14.8.79 Squatting Front Row. 3rd from far right

A short summary of his entry

Message revealed to him before he slept that night. SOMers were spoken to by the message because it first spoke to Ah Chang.

Calvin comments: “Spiritual in character – may he develops grace fully”

Fast forward more than 30 years later:

Rev. Tang Ah Chang graduated and is the Principal of ISOM,  Cebu City, Phillipines.

3. Sister Doris (Seated 2nd row. 3rd from left)

Told to leave by her mom. Persecution from family. Able to discern divine guidance.

4. Ruth Tan’s experience ( Seated 2nd row. 1st from left)

29 children accepted Christ in the pioneering S. School in 1978. By 1979 only two remained. The root of the problem – not deep! Salvation not genuine (Ruth needs encouragement)

5. Peter Tan (25.3.1978) Seated 2nd row. 1st from right.

  1. Left BHS for ChinaTown E/M. Met a blind man named Abraham as he was returning. Helped him across the road and asked him questions concerning what he wanted to buy. Peter got impatient. Felt like going back but the Holy Spirit stopped him.

After purchasing what he wants he accepted Christ later when Peter preached to him the second time. (Luke 8:15) Result of patience  – brings forth fruit.

2. Earnest SOMer

Spoke to a negro in his cabin and he gave Peter all his filthy pictures.

3. On another occasion  preach to a cigarette smoking R.C. 8/10/79

4. Met a patient in the hospital to whom many SOMers have preached to before. At first Peter reasoned with him with his intellect was confounded and waked by the Lord.

Confessed and then preached Christ to him. God brought conviction to his heart. He prayed the sinner’s prayer and gave Peter all his cigarettes from his cupboard.

So brethren, done away with your intellect and preach Christ and Him crucified

3 things:

  1. Sin
  2. Righteousness
  3. Judgment

Amen and Amen.

Calvin comments: Rev Peter Tan is ordained and now ministering to the Bible Presbyterian Churches of Singapore today.

6. Simon Chong (12 to 18, March, 1978) Standing at 4th row. 2nd from right

Boasted that there was no temptation when entering SOM. Prayed for persecution: and one day his mother and brother came to SOM. Persuaded and slapped him. Before leaving the mother told him not to return home.

However, a few days later he was told to go home by his mother. On reaching home he received a letter. Expecting the worst he prayed. He was stunned when he read it. 6th March was a test put to him and he passed it. Because of his integrity his mother promised to assist his monetary need. His mum promised his favourite dishes.

7. Tang Tuck Keong (seated 2nd row. 4th from right)

Gave God the glory for all blessings. Enjoyed Friday night prayers.

Today Rev Dr Tang Tuck Keong is the Senior Pastor of JSM Singapore

8. Brother Lai Guan (2 Semester 1979) Squatting front row. Center: 6th from either right or left.

Persecuted SOMer!!

On Lord’s Day he was broke. No money for breakfast, nor money for transport to SOM. But deep in his heart he believed God will supply his needs.

3 reasons:

1.God will not let him suffer hunger because He even takes care of the sparrow.

2.God will not want him to break SOM rule because he must be back by Sunday night

3.He believed that God will glorify Himself and increase his faith and encourage others that God is faithful to His Word in hearing prayers. Psalm 34:10

While he was doing something, suddenly, a Chinese JSMer approached and passed him $5.00 When he passed it to him he said that God is touching him to give

Hear the words of Lai Guan,

“Got faith, got blessing.

No faith, no blessing.

Got faith, got money;

No faith, got suffer.”

9. Sister Lai Keng. Standing 3rd row. 3rd from right. A sister of conviction: practical & responsible.

When in Malaysia she had not enough money. She bought some books from a store and got just few cents left. Brother Paul gave her and Dorothy a lunch treat and paid for her bus fare to Tanjung Bungah JSM, Penang. Thinking how to go home (to Singapore) on reaching Tanjung Bungah, brother Lucky handed her an envelope containing 10 dollars.

The song in Philippians 4:19 came to her mouth.

Calvin comments: Praise the good LORD for her faith & God’s Great Faithfulness.

She like, so many others lived by faith on “super natural” provision. See Penang to Singapore

Map from George Town, Penang, Malaysia to Singapore

 (711.2 km). Between Penang to Singapore is a distance of 711.2 Km

In year 1979 (More than 40 years ago) it will take more than 14 hours by long distance bus from Penang to Singapore. Nothing is impossible BECAUSE OUR GOD IS FAITHFUL.

By Faith GOD Almighty Provided all her needs.

Amen! and Amen!

Note: There are many more testimonies as the Story of God’s work unfolds through the years.

We covert your earnest prayers that the Holy Spirit will bring back the Days of His Visitation to the praise and glory of Jesus!

Dear Prayer Partners,

The Title of our Message this Sunday is, “ASK, AND IT SHALL BE GIVEN UNTO YOU”

Simple & terse, yet too simple for many as we do not always take God at His Word.

In years 1975, 1976 and even early 1977 there were times of great testing of our faith. Many times God provided at the very last minutes or even to the last seconds.

But living like this is not the norm. The Children of Israel lived by the provision of Manna in the desert for 40 years till they entered Canaan. Elijah and the poor widow woman lived on the flour and oil that never failed “till the day God sent rain on the earth”.

Now in early 1977 God led us to pray for more specific supplies.

  1. A quiet place.

In the BHS JSM the hall downstairs was used as a Kindergarten during the week days. And on Saturday the Student’s Club. Then on Sunday we have our Worship Service. Upstairs were 2 rooms. One used by our Resident Missioner Rhoda & one used as a Store.

Many days I would try to study or catch some sleep in the day. But no sooner a I closed the door will come a knock. Someone and somebody always come in to get stuff for the kindergarten or others. So there is no peace unless we go to Mt. Faber.

But that again has no proper shelter when it rained

So we prayed for a place. Thank Almighty God. One day Brother Matthew Khoo said a bother has been touched to open his home for us to use. That was a marvelous answer to pray. That 1st Floor walk up HDB Apartment about 15 minutes away was a place of sanctuary for prayer, rest and meditation.

This was how the Shunamite Woman provided a small room for Prophet Elisha

 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.

Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

2. More consistent supply of financial needs

There were days when i don’t even have One dollar in the pocket. One day in year 1977 a brother wanted to borrow a dollar. I had very little money then. A dollar in those days will get a good meal as noodles only 50 sen a bowl & mixed rice cost about a dollar. A cup of iced drink only 10 cent. Having needs of my own at first i hesitated but I  gave to him seeing his urgent plea.

Lo! and behold! few hours later I received S$3.70!

But again $3.70 will only last less than a few days.

So I prayed more earnestly & looked to God for more

One day I received a money order sent from Christmas Island

The sender was Bro Peter Ho who worked there in the phosphate mining industry

And for the next two years Bro Peter Ho sent help regular month after month with money orders of $40, $65 or more each time. (May God reward him abundantly.)

This opens the door for more settled peace and quietness for the two Greatest Years of Battles yet ahead in BHS JSM: Circa 1977 & 1978

See a photo of Phosphate Mining on Christmas Island (circa 1977)

Unbeknownst to us one day in years 1980/81 at ShamRock Beach, Tanjung Bungah, Penang, I met  brother Peter Ho who  returned from his work on Christmas Island & I was called to serve God in Penang Rifle Range JSM for 2 years 3 months from year 1979, 1980 & till March 1981

Below squatting right in front 4th from left is Brother Peter Ho in white long sleeved shirt with black framed spectacle.

Also above photo 1st from Top left sister Suan Ho, 6th from Top left is sister Phobe Tan (saved in year 1979 Ipoh Camp),  Top 2nd from Right is Brother Elisha Yee Bee Chong (his salvation will be another interesting story of grace). 4th from Top Right is Sister Jeannie Koay

All these 4 were Called to SOM later in years 1980/81

Also kneeling 1st from front row left is Sister Eunice Khoo (Sister of Rev. Matthew Khoo) who responded to the Call and in later years was a great blessing in the BEREAN BOOK ROOM MINSTRY IN KL JSM (Circa 1982 to 1987.)

All Praise & Glory to Almigthy Loving Father

We would request your earnest prayers as we post on 1977 & 78 in BHS JSM, Spore (battling against the powers of darkness)

And 1979 to March 1981 Penang JSM (Very fierce battle against the devil)

It is only when you go into battle for Souls that you feel the keenest attack of the enemy

So please pray for us as we post

Thank you for praying

FAITH PROMISE OFFERING ( A controversial theme) So read with open mind

Dear Prayer Warriors,

In 1975 we stayed in Craig Road JSM for a season

Here 46 years ago in Singapore, China Town, as it was known, dwelled some of the poorest people.

I saw one woman fell down in the Mission. Together with Missioner Goh Geok Ling we paid her a visit at the hospital. After she was discharged we visited her home. To our horror she lived in a Box. Such was the abject poverty of those times.

But these Elderly converts though poor, are rich in faith. I remember one Elderly man said he had a dream. He said he saw a man in white with his finger pointing upward. Indicating that an angel told him God is soon taking him  back up to heaven as his face beamed.

I remember one Elderly man aged 90 years old. He was a short man only 4 feet tall living in a Wooden Crate about 6 feet by 6 feet.

One day after visiting him and exhorted him I prayed for him and told him to pray.

This was his sincere prayer.

Translated, “Jesus loves me; Jesus loves me; Jesus loves me; I love Jesus”

Hearing his prayer I wanted to laugh & cry at the same time.

Laugh because of his childlike simplicity. Cry because I empathize with his deep poverty.

Not long after I decided to take up Faith Promise Offering for the Mission poor.

Faith Promise Offering was popularised by Oswald J. Smith.

To give by faith between God & the giver. It should be a secret covenant. Now JSM did not advocate Faith Promise Offering. But I shared on this one Sunday Afternoon Worship in BHS Jesus Saves Mission, Jalan Membina Barat, Tiong Bahru

At that time I was still very young in the faith. Today, Faith Promise Offering has been abused as a form of raising wealth for those in power. And the Charismatics have made merchandise of it with the pervered “seed-faith” brick with the promise of riches for those who give. Far from it.

The motive for faith giving is to promote God’s Kingdom for Foreign Missions Plus to store up treasure in heaven.

So in year 1975 I pledged Rm500. And God supplied. Then in year 1976 I raised the giving to Rm800. God again graciously provided. In year 1977 I preached on Faith Promise Offering (without handing out pledge forms. It was a personal “secret deal” with God & God alone.

In year 1977 I pledged to give Rm1,500 (this last pledge was only answered much later by year 1981)

See the records

Since year 1977 we have not spoken about Faith Promise Offering (that was 44 years ago)

Looking back. It would be far better to be concerned for those needy ones around us than those in Foreign Missions.

The two who lived in Crates or Boxes should have been our first concern

Crate - Wikiwand

Above is an example of those living in Wooden Crates. The poverty years of 1974/5 Chinatown Slum, Singapore

Galatians 2:10 – Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

James 1:27 – Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Above admonition I think I have fallen short. This is one area I need to improve on

May God have mercy

Glory be unto God Most High

LMD: Last Minute Deliverance

Dear praying friends,

Last post we mentioned how our Loving Father provided our needs at the most crucial seconds.

Looking back more than 45 years now to those 2 memorable nights I sometime pondered.

Since we have no money for Bus fares and we on the way to board the Bus. What if we arrived there and still got no money to pay for the Bus fare when the Bus arrived?

Will we board the bus without money? If we did we would have broken the law & sinned

And if not then we will be stranded there

In those times of Great Faith we did not doubt at all. We know intuitively God is a very present help in trouble. Such were the times we lived and breathed in

Daniel 11:32 (KJV) ~ But the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

Only on hindside we see how we lived on “supernatural provisions” all those testing years

Now when we entered SOM one of the requirement is to keep a Diary. We need to record the Diary daily for markings. After Rev. Dr Ng found out my times of financial straits he would fetch me home to Toa Payoh for dinner betimes.

I mentioned what Robert Murray McCheyne said, “God gave me a message to preach & a horse to ride on. Alas I have killed the horse and I cannot deliver the message” The horse referred to his body. McCheyne died at age 29. So he could no longer deliver the gospel

So Dr.Ng would say, “Come for dinner. Feed the horse.” Many times I would be invited for dinner. Mrs. Ng would cook up delicious food. And she said, “See the green vegetable with red coloring. How much do you think they cost?” Hmmm? Before I could reply she said, “Only 10 cents”! After dinner I always volunteered to wash the dishes. And I was taught to turn on the tap to minimal flow as it will conserve water. Such is the frugal atmosphere we were brought up.

Now as I did not want to burden them I stopped writing about my times of financial needs

God our Great Loving Father provided all our needs in miraculous & marvelous ways.

In PK Mission one afternoon a brother gave me a packet of rice. In SOM when I was down to penniless Some One Put a $10 bill inside my Bible. One day in BHS Mission a sister gave me a Big cake. That was my lunch and dinner. And there was a period of 9 days I don’t even have a single dollar in my pocket yet God provided all through those days.

Every time I encountered the last minute deliverance I would write this

L.M.D in the Diary. Sprinkled through the Diaries of 1975 to 1978 (especially 1977 & 78) were L.M.D (Last minute deliverance)

Every step of faith saw an opening of a miracle working God.

King James Bible (Joshua 3:13)
And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordanthat the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.

For the Red Sea it was only after Moses stretched the Rod the sea parted.

But for the Crossing of River Jordan

The Feet of the Priests must step on the brim of the River Jordan (only then the River Jordan parted)

So is faith. Faith acts by deeds of trust in His unfailing promises.

Without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that cometh to God must believe that God is (or God exists) and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him

(Heb. 11:6)

As George Muller told Hudson Taylor, “Learn to move men through God by prayer alone”

All through those years it was not how faithful we were but the Great Faithfulness of A Compassionate God

10 Best Printable Footprints In The Sand -

Yes in years 1974 I was only a two years old Christian. And it was the LORD Who carried me.

King James Bible (Isaiah 63:9)
In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

In all their suffering, He suffered, and the Angel of His Presence saved them. He redeemed them because of His love and compassion; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of the past.

After more than 45 years we can testify God not just carry His children in youth only but also until hoary hairs

King James Bible (Isaiah 46:4)
And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years I will carry you! I have done it, and I will bear you; And I will carry you and I will save you.

Even until your old age, I am the one, and I’ll carry you even until your gray hairs come. It is I who have created, and I who will carry, and it is I who will bear and save.

Amen & Amen

The years were 1977/8

The Place: Jesus Saves Mission, Bkt Ho Swee, Tiong Bahru, Singapore

One evening after Sunday Worship we found out we had no money. No money to take bus fare back to SOM (School of Mission) in Admiralty Road, Sembawang

Both Paul & myself were from Malaysia. With S$80 for monthly allowance for food, expenses & transport we usually run out of money half way through the month

Rest of the time we live by faith

And so on this night we found ourselves with no money

But we had faith. Faith in the Invisible Living God

So lifting up his hand Paul prayed. Then I prayed

Dear Almighty God

Thank you for the wonderful time of Preaching & Teaching today. We rejoice in this time of Thy visitation in revival

Now your servants got need. Please help us and provide for our fares back to SOM

Map from Hdb Membina Court, 26A Jln Membina, Singapore 162026 to Admiralty Rd

About 30 km distance away is our destination

Between that we had no money but only Faith in Him

30 km will be a long walk after serving God in Soul winning (12 noon) Adult Bible Study Class (3pm), Worship Service (4pm to 6pm) on a happy but tired day

As we walked towards Tiong Bahru to take the bus there. Almost more than halfway God sent His “angel” of deliverance in the person of bro Eng Thye (Now Rev Tan Eng Thye)

He paid for our fares just at the most crucial moment

Another Sunday evening and this time both Paul & I were in dire straits again. No money in our pocket. Not even one cent left.

This time I prayed and told Brother Paul to close in prayer asking for God’s deliverance

And this time we were led to take the Bus from Lower Delta Road which is only 2 minutes away from the Mission just across the Road

Just as we arrived at the Bus Stop God in His Divine Timing sent His “angel” in the person of Sis Rhoda Khoo. She ran after us and paid for our bus fares in the nick of time

God moved people in mysterious ways to help us in the very crucial moment of time

We will always remember HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD

Psalm 46:1  God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
