IS NOT THIS THE LAND OF BEULAH, Author Unknown

In year 1973 I attended JSM Workers’ Conference on Penang Hill, 50 years ago.

It was a very blessed and memorable Camp up the Mountain

And this song came to me in great blessing

Is Not This the Land of Beulah?

1. I am dwelling on the mountain,Where the golden sunlight gleamsO’er a land whose wondrous beautyFar exceeds my fondest dreamsWhere the air is pure, ethereal,Laden with the breath of flow’rs,They are blooming by the fountain,‘Neath the amaranthine bow’rs.

Chorus:
Is not this the land of Beulah?Blessed, blessed land of light,Where the flowers bloom forever,And the sun is always bright!

2. I can see far down the mountain,Where I wandered weary years,Often hindered in my journeyBy the ghosts of doubts and fears;Broken vows and disappointmentsThickly sprinkled all the way,But the Spirit led, unerring,To the land I hold today.

Is not this the land of Beulah?Blessed, blessed land of light,Where the flowers bloom forever,And the sun is always bright!

3. I am drinking at the fountain,Where I ever would abide; For I’ve tasted life’s pure river,And my soul is satisfied; There’s no thirsting for life’s pleasures,Nor adorning, rich and gay,For I’ve found a richer treasure,One that fadeth not away.

Is not this the land of Beulah?Blessed, blessed land of light,Where the flowers bloom forever,And the sun is always bright!

4. Tell me not of heavy crosses,Nor of burdens hard to bear,For I’ve found this great salvationMakes each burden light appear; And I love to follow Jesus,Gladly counting all but dross,Worldly honors all forsakingFor the glory of the cross.

Is not this the land of Beulah?Blessed, blessed land of light,Where the flowers bloom forever,And the sun is always bright!

5. Oh, the cross has wondrous glory!Oft I’ve proved this to be true; When I’m in the way so narrow,I can see a pathway through; And how sweetly Jesus whispers:“Take the cross, thou need’st not fear,For I’ve tried the way before thee, “And the glory lingers near

Is not this the land of Beulah?Blessed, blessed land of light,Where the flowers bloom forever,And the sun is always bright!

Beulah is found in Isaiah 62:4
“Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married:
Beulah is mentioned in the Pilgrim’s Progress as

“Now I saw in my dream, that by this time the Pilgrims were got over the Enchanted Ground, and entering into the country of Beulah, whose air was very sweet and pleasant, the way lying directly through it, they solaced themselves there for a season. Yea, here they heard continually the singing of birds, and saw every day the flowers appear on the earth, and heard the voice of the turtle (dove) in the land. In this country the sun shines night and day; wherefore this was beyond the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and also out of the reach of Giant Despair, neither could they from this place so much as see Doubting Castle. Here they were within sight of the city they were going to, also here met them some of the inhabitants thereof; for in this land the Shining Ones commonly walked, because it was upon the borders of heaven. In this land also, the contract between the bride and the bridegroom was renewed; yea, here, “As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so did their God rejoice over them.” Here they had no want of corn and wine; for in this place they met with abundance of what they had sought for in all their pilgrimage. Here they heard voices from out of the city, loud voices, saying, “‘Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh! Behold, his reward is with him!’ Here all the inhabitants of the country called them, ‘The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord, Sought out'”, etc.

Now as they walked in this land, they had more rejoicing than in parts more remote from the kingdom to which they were bound; and drawing near to the city, they had yet a more perfect view thereof. It was built of pearls and precious stones, also the street thereof was paved with gold; so that by reason of the natural glory of the city, and the reflection of the sunbeams upon it, Christian with desire fell sick; Hopeful also had a fit or two of the same disease. Wherefore, here they lay by it a while, crying out, because of their pangs, If you find my beloved, tell him that I am sick of love.”

And here is the exposition

Sitting on the Hill Top of Penang in the morning we sang

I am dwelling on the mountain.

Mountain speaks of nearness to heaven with its sun shine & pure air.

When angels told Lot to leave Sodom “he was to escape to the mountain” (Gen. 19:17)

The Christian Life should progress towards the mountain of fellowship with Christ on high.

Jesus often go up to the mountain to pray. The Sermon on the Mount was given on the mountain

And the Transfiguration happened on a very high mountain

Ruth Paxson mentioned “LIFE ON THE HIGHEST PLANE” in her book which depicts Christian living in Victory

And this is the state of living in Beulah land

As the Author exclaimed

“IS NOT THIS THE LAND OF BEULAH?

OR IS NOT THIS THE BLESSED STATE OF BLISS IN VICTORIOUS FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

Is not this the land of Beulah?Blessed, blessed land of light,Where the flowers bloom forever,And the sun is always bright!

In this state there is mountain top fellowship with Christ. Where there are singing of birds and sunshine and flowers

Stanza Two

A depiction of those weary years of wandering far down the mountain away in the world beset by the ghosts of doubts, fears, broken vows & disappointments.

These are sprinkled thickly all along the way and often hindered us in our pilgrim journey.

We would have been turned away out of the Christian Faith if not for the unerring leading of the Holy Spirit who made all the difference

Notice the word “BUT”

“But” the Spirit led unerring!

Yes! BUT GOD in Eph. 2

See again

Eph. 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

STANZA THREE

3. I am drinking at the Fountain of Life. Where there is true and complete satisfaction.

As Augustine said, “Our hearts are restless till they find rest in Thee”

Having found Christ we are fully satisfied as we abide in pure fellowship with Him

And no more thirsting for other earthly pleasure which is fleeting. When the inward soul is satiated with the Fullness of God the outward desire of adornment now has lost its hold on the Christian now and for ever.

Stanza 4

Neither tell me of heavy crosses nor of burdens hard to bear.

Why?

Answer: “FOR I’VE FOUND THIS GREAT SALVATION!

Every burden is too light in the light of HIS GREAT SALVATION!

Make each burden light appear.

Because “WE LOVE TO FOLLOW JESUS”

Gladly counting all as dross.

Every worldly honor forsaking  for a higher honor and glory of the cross!

Stanza 5

O THE CROSS!

THE CROSS HAS WONDROUS GLORY!

Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, land take up his cross daily, and follow me”

To every one who wants to follow Jesus let him DENY HIMSELF, TAKE UP HIS CROSS

AND TAKE IT UP DAILY (DAY BY DAY), AND FOLLOW JESUS

Though the path may be narrow. God will make a pathway through

Because Jesus HAS TAKEN UP HIS CROSS and bade us sweetly to follow IN HIS STEPS.

AND THE CROSS LEADS TO GLORY! WONDROUS, GLORIOUS FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

IS NOT THIS THE LAND OF BEULAH?

BLESSED! BLESSED FELLOWSHIP WITH CHRIST IN HEAVENLY PLACES

HE HIDETH MY SOUL By Fanny Crosby (A sharing by Calvin Tan)

Dear praying friends,

One of the most blessed hymn loved by many is “HE HIDETH MY SOUL” By Fanny Crosby

And today we will take a look

Fanny Crosby (extracted from Wikipedia)

Frances Jane van Alstyne (née Crosby; March 24, 1820 – February 12, 1915), more commonly known as Fanny J. Crosby, was an American mission worker, poet, lyricist, and composer. She was a prolific hymnist, writing more than 8,000 hymns and gospel songs,[a] with more than 100 million copies printed.[1] She is also known for her teaching and her rescue mission work. By the end of the 19th century, she was a household name.[2]

Crosby was known as the “Queen of Gospel Song Writers”[3] and as the “Mother of modern congregational singing in America”,[4] with most American hymnals containing her work.[5] Her gospel songs were “paradigmatic of all revival music”,[6] and Ira Sankey attributed the success of the Moody and Sankey evangelical campaigns largely to Crosby’s hymns.[7] Some of Crosby’s best-known songs include “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour“, “Blessed Assurance“, “Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home”, “Praise Him, Praise Him”, “Rescue the Perishing”, and “To God Be the Glory“. Some publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, so Crosby used nearly 200 different pseudonyms during her career.[8][b]

At six weeks old, Crosby caught a cold and developed inflammation of the eyes. Mustard poultices were applied to treat the discharges.[23] According to Crosby, this procedure damaged her optic nerves and blinded her, but modern physicians think that her blindness was more likely congenital and, given her age, may simply not have been noticed by her parents.[24][25]

At age eight, Crosby wrote her first poem which described her condition.[29] She later stated: “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.”[30] She also once said, “when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior”.

Read again her words,

when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior”.

What a blessed Woman of God! (Calvin)

Crosby set a goal of winning a million people to Christ through her hymns, and whenever she wrote a hymn she prayed it would bring women and men to Christ, and kept careful records of those reported to have been saved through her hymns.[200]

What a prayer! Asking God for one million souls saved through her hymns

It was John Sung who asked God for 100,000 souls during his evangelistic campaign. But this godly woman of God has a larger faith

Now let us go into her Hymn

HE HIDETH MY SOUL

1 A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
a wonderful Savior to me.
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
where rivers of pleasure I see.

Refrain:
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
that shadows a dry, thirsty land.
He hideth my life in the depths of his love,
and covers me there with his hand,
and covers me there with his hand.

2 A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord;
he taketh my burden away.
He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved;
he giveth me strength as my day. [Refrain]

3 With numberless blessings each moment he crowns,
and filled with his fullness divine,
I sing in my rapture,“Oh, glory to God
for such a Redeemer as mine!” [Refrain]

4 When clothed in his brightness, transported I rise
to meet him in clouds of the sky,
his perfect salvation, his wonderful love,
I’ll shout with the millions on high. [Refrain]

Stanza One is A Statement

1 A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
a wonderful Savior to me.

A testimony that Jesus is a Wonderful Saviour

And this was what Jesus did

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
where rivers of pleasure I see.

Text taken from Exodus 33:22

22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

Moses experienced the Glorious Presence of God

“In Thy Presence is fullness of joy. At Thy right hand there are pleasures for ever more”

The Chorus or refrain

He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
that shadows a dry, thirsty land.
He hideth my life in the depths of his love,
and covers me there with his hand,
and covers me there with his hand.

The land where Moses traveled through was a very hot and dry land. And word pictured like “cleft of the Rock with its protective shadows that shade Moses from the hot blazing sun is a refuge indeed.

This world that we now live in is full of distress: drought, inflation, bank failures, rumours of wars and full of dangers from earthquakes, tsunami & tornadoes

Thank God! He is the same refuge where we can hide

God promised to cover and protect us with his hand.

Stanza Two

What Wonderful things Jesus has done and is still doing

a) he taketh my burden away.

Jesus takes away our burden of life. Let us cast all our cares & burdens on Jesus by prayer

b) He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved;

He sustains us. By Jesus’ intercession we stand

c) he giveth me strength as my day. [Refrain]

He gives us strength day by day all through our lives

In fact he is with us everyday & every moment of our life

Stanza Three

3 With numberless blessings each moment he crowns,
and filled with his fullness divine,

Each and every moment He crowns us with numberless blessings!

So much overflowing blessings that move us to sing!

I sing in my rapture,“Oh, glory to God
for such a Redeemer as mine!” [Refrain]

Not only sing (present tense)

In coming glorious future (future tense)

We will shout!

4 When clothed in his brightness, transported I rise
to meet him in clouds of the sky,
his perfect salvation, his wonderful love,
I’ll shout with the millions on high. [Refrain]

I  “Sing” is the present tense

I WILL SHOUT” Is the Future Tense

YES WE SING NOW

BUT ON THE DAY OF RAPTURE

WE WILL SHOUT WITH THE MILLIONS ON HIGH
