292TH ANNIVERSARY OF MORAVIAN REVIVAL On 13th August 1727

Today is the Anniversary of the August 13, 1727 Moravian Revival

A brief testimony.

In year 1975 I saw the book “POWER FROM ON HIGH” By John Greenfield when I visited the S&U Book Center in Peace Center, Selegie, Singapore.

It cost only $2.70. But I don’t have even $2.70 on that day. So I put the book back on the highest shelf. Days later when I got the money I went back to the Book Store and bought it

IT WAS A GREAT BLESSING TO READ IT. After reading it I lent it to Rev Dr Peter Ng & he in turn recommended it to Dr. Chia Boon Leong (retired doctor)

From this book we were taught more about the Great Power of Prayer. Fasting. Missions & sacrifice and above all the devotion to Jesus Christ.

And let me quote from online posting

THE MORAVIAN REVIVAL OF 1727

The congregation that experienced the revival was primarily made up of Moravians, who because of religious persecution, were exiled from their homeland of Moravia in 1722 and moved to the Saxony estate of Count Nicolas Zinzendorf.

This map shows where the Moravian refugees fled from, and where they took up their new residence, in Saxony.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Initial Stages
Herrnhut Moravian Community
►A divided Christian refugee community in the village of Herrnhut was made up primarily of the Moravian Church of the Brethren. With them were also Lutherans, Reformed, and Baptist believers. Their doctrinal differences created tremendous disunity.
►On May 12, 1727, the community entered into a covenant to emphasize the points they agree on, rather than stressing their differences.
►A period of extraordinary prayer followed.
Results of Unity and Extraordinary Prayer
►On August 13, 1727, the Moravian community was overwhelmed and filled with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at their communion service.
►There was a sense of the nearness of Christ given to everyone present, and also simultaneously to two members of their community working twenty miles away.
►They left that communion at noon, hardly knowing whether they belonged to earth or had already gone to heaven.
►From that time scarcely a day passed but we beheld His almighty workings amongst us.
►A great hunger after the Word of God took possession of us so that we had to have three services every day (5am; 7:30am; and 9pm).
►Everyone desired above everything else that the Holy Spirit might have full control.
►Self-love and self-will as well as all disobedience disappeared and an overwhelming flood of grace swept us all out into the great ocean of Divine Love.
Results
►The Herrnhut congregation (which never exceeded 300 people) started an around-the-clock prayer meeting, and it went on for 100 years.
►This was the first Protestant church body to begin missionary work.
►In the 25 years following the outpouring of the Spirit on the congregation on Aug. 13, 1727, the Moravian missionaries had carried the gospel not only to nearly every country in Europe, but also to many indigenous tribes in North and South America, Asia, and Africa.
►More than one hundred missionaries went forth from this village community in twenty-five years. This was more than what the whole Evangelical church had done in two centuries.
►The Herrnhut community became a spiritual retreat center, visited by people from all parts of Europe seeking to be saved or to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and with fire.
SO SEND I YOU By Margaret Clarkson
So send I you to labor unrewarded,
To serve unpaid, unloved, unsought, unknown,
To bear rebuke, to suffer scorn and scoffing-
So send I you to toil for Me alone.
So send I you to bind the bruised and broken,
O’er wand’ring souls to work, to weep, to wake,
To bear the burdens of a world aweary-
So send I you to suffer for My sake.
So send I you to loneliness and longing,
With heart ahung’ring for the loved and known,
Forsaking home and kindred, friend and dear one-
So send I you to know My love alone.
So send I you to leave your life’s ambition,
To die to dear desire, self-will resign,
To labor long, and love where men revile you-
So send I you to lose your life in Mine.
So send I you to hearts made hard by hatred,
To eyes made blind because they will not see,
To spend, tho’ it be blood, to spend and spare not-
So send I you to taste of Calvary.
Second set of words done years later:
So send I you—by grace made strong to triumph
O’er hosts of hell, o’er darkness, death and sin,
My name to bear and in that name to conquer
So send I you, My victory to win.
So send I you—to take to souls in bondage
The Word of Truth that sets the captive free,
To break the bonds of sin, to loose death’s fetters
So send I you, to bring the lost to me.
So send I you—My strength to know in weakness,
My joy in grief, My perfect peace in pain,
To prove my pow’r, My grace, My promised presence
So send I you, eternal fruit to gain.
So send I you—to bear My cross with patience,
And then one day with joy to lay it down,
To hear My voice, “Well done, My faithful servant
Come share My throne, My kingdom and My crown!”
“Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (John 20:21)”
YOUNG PRAYER WARRIORS IN COCHRANE ROAD SCHOOL (1973 -1974)
Some of my happiest times were praying with like minded School mates in Cochrane Road School
Apart from my fellow classmates in Form 4L2 there were brothers from other Classes who joined us in group prayers early morning before School starts. We also pray after School and during recess.
I remember there were 3 Prayer Groups. The Fundamentalists (who are Separatists), the New Evangelicals & even the cult of 7th Day Adventists. All were praying. Some how there was a prevailing spirit of prayer in the School.
I remember in particular one afternoon (about 4 or 5 brothers) we were praying at a small forest adjoining the school.
It suddenly rained – literally poured in torrents. I was totally drenched all over. It was eerily silent as we bowed before this flood of sudden monsoon rain. Opening my eyes I could see all my brothers drenched and some so cold that teeth clattered.  Yet all of us were still on our knees asking God to pour out His Holy Spirit of visitation on us.
Among these were Brother Paul Chiew Yoong San & John Goh Kee Eng.
Both later responded the Call to Serve God
Above photo is Brother Paul Chiew Yoong San
Below is Brother John Goh Kee Eng
The meetings were deeply devotional & full of fervency. Sometime we groaned in prayer under heavy burden for our fellow unsaved classmates. Groaning without words are prayers that will be most effective. But oh the deep peace and joy that overflowed from the depth of our hearts. Both Brothers Paul & John were from the KL JSM  (Circa 1973 – 1974)
Let me continue with how I first attended the KL JSM.
Sometime in year 1973 when I was on my way to BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH
I used to pass by the JESUS SAVES MISSION in Jalan Kenanga, KL, which is conducting a Church Service as well. Someone invited me to attend the Meeting. So I decided to check it out.
Brother Samuel Loh & Kok Wei spoke to me. (I couldn’t recall what they said). Then they closed in prayer
And this is their very red hot fervent prayer in confession
“DEAR GOD,
PLEASE FORGIVE US OUR SINS FOR OUR THOUGHTS ARE EVIL, OUR LIPS ARE UNCLEAN, OUR HEARTS ARE WICKED, OUR EYES ARE LUSTFUL AND OUR HANDS ARE SOILED WITH SINS…….”
While Brother Samuel Loh laid bare his soul in confession Brother Kok Wei who stood beside said
“IT’S TRUE LORD. IT’S TRUE”
“IT’S TRUE LORD. IT’S TRUE!” AMEN.
These were very fervent heart rending confessions!
Ha! I was totally taken aback and shocked!
In the Baptist Church I never heard  this kind of prayer or confession. It was but a very formal cold type of prayer
And so I was afraid.
I didn’t go back to the Jesus Saves Mission until one day I decided to hear their Sermon on Sunday.
I heard how they prayed. I was curious to know how they preached.
To be continued….
2 YEARS OF WITNESSING IN COCHRANE ROAD SCHOOL
We were posted to Form Four L2 Class of 1973 in Cochrane Road School. Here we met totally new student friends except for Mohd Sdolehuddin & myself. And my, all our classmates were brilliant & gifted!
We were Top First & Second in our Form Three in San Peng Road School. But here we face more intelligent and smart students to our surprise. And Pure Science is tough going with double Maths! So we struggled.
But deep in heart we have a burning desire. A desire to win all our classmates to Christ!
And so we immediately started witnessing. All crowd around us as we shared the Gospel. Then teacher arrived. And every one ran back to their desks.
Chemistry Teacher finished her lesson? Preaching starts again. All crowd round to hear. Next Biology  teacher arrived. They dispersed again.
And so it went on and on.
At first we thought there were only 2 Christians in Class. Then one classmate said, “Why are you preaching? Why? There are other Christians in Class who don’t preach like you guys.”
I asked in surprise, “Who are they?” Getting very curious.
Then we found out. Edwin Law said, “We are not like you. We don’t preach like you. Because we are silent Christians”
And another classmate called Lee Kok Keong chipped in, “Yes we are not so aggressive and outspoken like you”. We only share when people ask us or show interest.”
Ha! Now we got to know 2 nominal Christians in Class. We were quite happy.
As days go by some softened and received the Gospel. 1st Boy in Class Lim Poh Aun accepted Christ as Saviour.
Then Tong Yee Cham and Cheah Peng Yip. Some were more open to the quiet approach of Mohd Sdolehuddin, so  listened to him.
We spoke in Class and we also visited fellow classmates in their home
Not far from my house lived Yoong Sao Chin, another bright jovial young man. Arriving at his home I started to preach.
Sao Chin objected and said, “I am a Buddhist”
“Buddha cannot save you because Buddha didn’t die for your sins” I insisted
At that Sao Chin face turned red and shouted, “You speak against my Buddha. You better get out of my house. You are not welcome!”
WOW! He’s really angry & mad at me as I walked back home
In School to my surprise Sao Chin turned from me with a very cold look. From then on he avoided me like an enemy.
Oh boy, what have I done. I was trying to be kind & now I have made some “enemy”?
Several months passed. Then one day to my surprise… Yoong Sao Chin got up from his desk right from the very front where he sat and walked to the very back row of the desk where I sat
He was walking and approaching me in my direction
What’s up? As I was caught by surprise & don’t know how to react or what to say
Then as Sao Chin moved nearer and nearer he stretched out his hand with a very wide smile. I thought it was some kind of trick or joke? But I got up and held out my hand
Sao Chin grabbed my hand and exclaimed, “PRAISE THE LORD!”
I WAS SO THRILLED AND SO HAPPY INDEED!!
Sao Chin then explained to me that a fellow classmate from A Class (We were in B Class) witnessed to him more clearly & he accepted Jesus as LORD & SAVIOUR finally. I think a quarter of the Class turned Christians when we finished our 2 years of study.
AMEN & AMEN!
DESTINIES WERE MADE BY THE TOSS OF A COIN
By End 1972 Our LCE (Lower Certificate of Education) Exam results were out.
Both Mohd Sdolehuddin & I passed with good grades. We were both from San Peng Road Lower Secondary School in Kuala Lumpur, Capital of Malaysia.
And to our glad surprise only 2 of us from our entire Class qualified to go to either the Art or Science Stream.
For Art stream our study will continue in Form Four in Cheras Road School. And for Science Stream we will be in the 4th Form in Cochrane Road School.
As we were then very young and inexperienced we sought God for His will to be done. I took out a coin and prayed to God.
“Dear God,
If you want us to continue our study in Science give us a head as we toss the coin. But if it is your will to study Art Stream then give us a tail.”  So up went the coin as it spinned & spinned and then it rested in my palm.
IT’S A HEAD!!  SO TO SCIENCE CLASS IN COCHRANE ROAD SCHOOL WE SHALL GO!
Of course on hindsight after more than 46 years now I think this is not the usual way of determining God’s will for our lives.
We should seek God’s will by meditating on His Word & also consult more experienced Pastors or Counselors.
But we were only few months in the faith. And we had great faith and expectation ahead.
In my next post we will share how God led us to win souls among our classmates in Cochrane Road School for Years 1973 & 1974
So Destinies Were Made By The Toss of A Coin.
3 DREAMS OR 3 VISIONS DURING MY EARLY CONVERSION YEARS
We normally dream dreams in our sleep. But Vision is more than dreaming. Vision is defined as
“In Scripture, a revelation from God; an appearance or exhibition of something supernaturally presented to the minds”
1st Vision
I already related my dream which was a “Vision” from God while I was sleeping sometime in September 15, 1972.
I saw myself walking home and my body was filled with diseases. On reaching home I saw the furniture all in a mess. And then I saw a Cross broken into half and dangling.
Then I saw Jesus Christ crucified for my sins on the Cross.
Then I got up from my dream while it was still dark (about 5am in the morning)
And I remembered I was perspiring with sweat in the cold morning
I got out and knelt beside my bed & accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord & Saviour
I felt to my great surprise, a burden of over 200 pound load removed from my shoulder & from that day I was delivered from the devil and the power of the gambling habit.
2nd Vision
Straightaway I started to witness to my best friend – Mohd Sdolehuddin about Jesus being the True Saviour.
He did not believe as he was a Muslim (His father was a Malay but his mother is Chinese). After trying to convince him as best I could it was still no use.
Then I said, “Mohd, do you ever dream?”
“No”, Mohd replied. “I sleep very soundly every night without dreams or nightmares” “My sleep is always very peaceful”
“Mohd”, I said, “You will be getting a dream which will shake you out of your bed”
“What?” Mohd retorted, “No such thing” “I don’t believe this nonsense”
I insisted, “Mohd, you will get a dream which will shake you out of your slumber”
Weeks passed. And one day Mohd Sdolehuddin came to visit me in my house.
“Can I talk to you in the quietness of your room?” He asked. “Yes of course” and  I brought him to the back of the Apartment & sat down.
Then Mohd said, “I will now tell you something that will greatly surprise you”
“Go ahead”, I replied
“One night I was sleeping”, Mohd continued. “I saw myself walking on the Street. Then I saw the Street Lights caught fire and people everywhere were running helther and skelther.
But I was trembling in fear. My knees were weak and I could not move”
Then I woke up. And I sweated all over. The night was pitch dark when I got up still trembling in fear”
After hearing Mohd out I said, “I am not surprised  at all Mohd” I have been expecting God to answer my prayers. I have been praying day and night for you to be saved”
And so Mohd Sdolehhudin was my first convert more than 47 years ago
3rd Vision
Not long after Mohd got converted we visted Tan Shak Seong (brother of Jackson Tan Said Meng who told me about Jesus and gave me a copy of THIS WAS YOUR LIFE by Jack Chick)
We preached the gospel to Tan Shak Seong and got the usual reply. He slept peacefully every night
We told him that he will be getting a dream or vision that will utterly shake him up. Shak Seong was quite amused as Jackson has been telling him to trust in Christ but to no avail. But we told Shak Seong in great faith and expectation that he too, will get a vision from God
And not long after that Shak Seong shared his vision.
SHAK SEONG  SAW HIMSELF IN A VISION. HE KNEELING BEFORE GOD AT THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT. AND HE WAS TREMBLING IN THE GREATEST FEAR FOR HIS LIFE
On hearing that I was quite jealous at first. Why Shak Seong has the privilege of seeing GOD ALMIGHTY AT THE GREAT WHITE THRONE? Why not me?
Then I thought. Why do you want to see THE GREAT WHITE THRONE?
IS NOT THE VISION OF CALVARY FAR FAR BETTER?
YES!! TO THIS DAY I THINK I AM HAPPIEST IN SEEING MY DEAR LORD JESUS CHRIST DYING FOR ME ON THE CROSS
AMEN & AMEN
King James Bible (Acts 2:17)
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Yes, all 3 of us had visions in our days of youth about 16 to 17 years in age.
Now in our sixties these words old men shall dream dreams” also come true.
What kind of dreams? More about ” old men shall dream dreams:” in coming articles.
Please pray when you visit this website. Pray while you read. And also pray for more of God’s anointing as we post.
Thank you and may God Almighty bless all who visit here.
