When I Survey The Wondrous Cross (Part 4)

See from his head, his hands his feet. Sorrow and love flowed mingled down

To see is once but to survey is a constant, careful look and look again at the blood flowing down from his head, flowing down from his hands and from his feet – spreading and covering his bruised and broken body…

Until his whole body is covered with his own precious Blood.

4) His dying crimson like a robe

Spread over His body on the tree

Then am I dead to all the globe

And all the globe is dead to me

During the 2nd World War the prisoners of the Thai-Burma Death Railway used toilet paper to write their memoirs. And they used their own blood as ink to write their woes and sufferings.

So God has used the Blood of Christ since the Foundation of the World to write the Greatest Love Story Ever Told (History is actually His Story. There is only one Story in Heaven – The Story of the Lamb Jesus)

Jesus was
” the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Rev.13:8b)

The Blood of Jesus is typified in the entire Bible running from Genesis to the book of Revelation.

In Genesis he was the “coat of skin” that covered Adam and Eve”

In Exodus he was the Passover Lamb. His Blood protected every home from the death angel.

In Joshua he was the “Scarlet Rope” that saved Rahab & her family.

His Dying Crimson… His Precious Holy Blood was written all over the Bible. “And without shedding of blood there is no remission of sin”

All saints in OT, NT and For forever are saved by the Blood of Jesus.

For those before Christ they kept the passover. Hands were placed on the sacrificial lambs and sins were confessed and passover to a future Saviour – that is Jesus Christ. Today all believers are saved by what Jesus did once and for all in Calvary. The LORD Supper is a remembrance of His Atoning Death on Calvary. So for those Jews who believed their faith is in the Future while Christians have their faith looking back to the past on Calvary

So THE CROSS is The Highest Peak of Divine Revelation – not end times prophecy or even New Heaven & Earth

YES!!

CALVARY. THE CROSS UPLIFTED ON CALVARY IS THE ULTIMATE FOCUS OF DIVINE MANIFESTATION

Here Jesus reconciled back all things & cried “It is finished”

And here is where the line is drawn for all who believed

“Ye are not your own for ye are bought with a price”

THEN AM I DEAD TO ALL THE WORLD AND THE WORLD IS DEAD TO ME

So we died with Jesus on the Cross, buried with Jesus & resurrected with Jesus to newness of life by identification.

And as we survey THE WONDROUS CROSS we can exclaim

5) Were the whole realm of nature mine

That were an offering far too small

Love so amazing, so divine

Demands my soul, my life , my all —

Note the words “Were the whole realm of nature mine” It speaks of the all encompassing solar system of nature.

And should it be given as an offering to Christ it is still an offering far too small.

It is a small offering

It is “too small” an offering

It is “far to small” an offering indeed

Because Love SO AMAZING SO DIVINE

IT DEMANDS MY SOUL, MY LIFE, MY ALL

It demands all my internal love, zeal, energy & my entire utmost bodily strength & all that I have and owned – MY ALL IN ALL BE GIVEN TO HIM BOTH NOW AND FOR “FOREVER”

Amen & Amen!

When I Survey The Wondrous Cross (Part 3) Or Thorns Composed So Rich A Crown?

In Isaac Watts immortal hymn he asked 2 question

  1. Did ever such love and sorrow meet?
  2. Or thorns composed so rich a Crown?

These are 2 Immortal Questions indeed!

When Adam fell the ground was cursed. And up came thorns & thistles.

Now The Son of God is given a wreath of thorns as a Crown by Man. From this Suffering Saviour whose brow is pierced by thorns came 5 Rich Crowns

Jesus Christ bought His Church with His own Blood & also prepared 5 Crowns

Crown of Life (Rev. 2:10) For those who suffer persecution for the Cross

Crown of Righteousness(2 Timothy 4:8) Those who love His 2nd Coming

Crown of Glory (1 Peter 5:4) For Pastors who shepherd the flocks faithfully.

Crown of Rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19) Those who win souls for Christ

Incorruptible Crown (1 Corinthians 9:2) Those who bear the Cross faithfully

What a Wondrous Crown of Thorns Jesus wore for us in exchange that we could get an opportunity to wear these 5 Crowns in His Kingdom when He returns again in Glory, Majesty & Great Power.

May we be faithful to fill up all our days in His most Glorious Service

We are not saved by good works. We are saved to Serve Him in doing good.

And in eternal gratitude to Him who is Worthy we don’t want any crowns in heaven. We only want Christ Jesus Himself

See

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. {Rev.4:10-11)

Amen & Amen

WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS By Isaac Watts (Part 2)

1) When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

On which the Prince of Glory died

My richest gain I count but Loss

And pour contempt on all my pride

2) Forbid it, LORD, that I should boast

Save in the death of Christ my God

All the vain things that charm me most

I sacrifice them to His Blood

3) See from His head, His hands, His feet

Sorrow and love flowed mingled down

Did ever such love and sorrow meet?

Or thorns composed so rich a crown?

4) His dying crimson like a robe

Spread over His body on the tree

Then am I dead to all the globe

And all the globe is dead to me

5) Were the whole realm of nature mine

That were an offering far too small

Love so amazing, so divine

Demands my soul, my life , my all —

This is the best song in the English language – so profound and so deep in its depths! Even Charles Wesley said that he was willing to give up all his hymns if he could only write just only  this one called, “WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS”.

And Charles Wesley wrote 6,000 hymns in his life time – 10 times more than Isaac Watts’ 600″s.

Just like Mt Faber in Singapore, Penang Hill on Penang Island and Gasing Ridge in KL I have found a place in Iskandar, Johor called Flora Heights

Here I have spent hundreds of times praying and in meditation over the years. During meditation 3 hymns moved me to tears as the Holy Spirit brought Jesus’s suffering before my vision –

  1. Alas and did My Saviour Bleed
  2. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
  3. There is a Fountain Filled with Blood

May the Holy Spirit of God makes Christ real again as we explore this hymn

When I survey

To survey means to ” look at, look over, take a look at, observe, view, contemplate, regard, see, gaze at, stare at”

It is like focusing all our attention on an object to get all the details we can find.

” the Wondrous Cross” There are 7 Wonders in the World which men have gone to see and among them are the Great Wall of China and the Taj Hahal of India.

To wonder means, ”
a feeling of amazement and admiration, caused by something beautiful, remarkable, or unfamiliar”

Here before us is the WONDER OF ALL WONDERS – “THE WONDROUS CROSS”

The Cross as the world sees it – is an instrument of torture invented during the Roman times. Untold suffering is inflicted to men in a slow, shameful death.

Yet God chose to give Mankind a demonstration of Love, Obedience, Forgiveness, Power and Ultimate Deliverance

IT IS A WONDROUS CROSS ON WHICH THE PRINCE OF GLORY DIED

Jesus Christ is with God the Father in Glory from Eternity to Eternity. At this point in time He came down to earth and died a death for all of us.

Beholding this sight Isaac Watts wrote, “My richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride” It is a revulsion of the highest degree against the sinful self in us… the pride, the sin, the ingrained unbelief.

Focusing our eyes only and solely on Jesus there is nothing to boast then except in The Death of Christ My God. All the vain things of earth that charm and ensnare now look dim as we in love sacrifice them to His Blood.

His Blood?

Yes His Very Blood – The Very Life of Life

See the Blood flowed from His head, his hands, his feet

His head for what He thinks of me, “For the Son of Man is come to seek and save that which was lost” Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

His hands..”He made this world. He healed the sick, raised the dead & feed thousands with 5 loves & 2 fishes”

His feet…”He always walked in obedience and finally he walked to Calvary

SEE FROM HIS HEAD, HIS HANDS, HIS FEET

They were wounded & pierced by thorns & nails and Blood gushed out and flowed down

SORROW AND LOVE FLOWED MINGLED DOWN

The Blood that Flowed from His Right Hand is the Blood of Love. And From His Left Hand Flowed the Blood of Sorrow. He loved therefore He died for us. He sorrowed because all the billion sins were laid on Him. And God The Father forsook him.

As the Blood Flowed Mingled down there merged as a puddle at The Foot of the Cross. This turned into A Fountain of Blood

The wonder now is a question, “Did ever such love and sorrow meet?”

No. There is no such love like this. God – the Very God. Became man – the very man. And to die for the creature man that He created?

For God SO LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life

Because this Love entails the greatest pain and SORROW to the Trinity. At this point in time the Trinity splits

“MY GOD MY GOD WHY HAS THOU FORSAKEN ME” Cried Jesus to His Father. The answer: “BUT THOU ART HOLY”

And so the Father turned from His only begotten Son in Sorrow.

“Did ever such love and sorrow meet?”

Yes it Did. “ON THE CROSS OF CALVARY!”
